Our story, told by the mountains
Thirteen years of quiet hospitality beneath The Remarkables.
Built from schist, rimu and patience
Actionofferway began as a weathered stone lodge on Brunswick Street, restored over two winters by the Callaghan family. The brief never changed: keep the soul of a high-country station, add the comfort of a five-star hotel, and leave the hurry at the door.
The bones are local — Otago schist walls, native rimu floors, hand-loomed wool, aged brass. The light does the rest, spilling off Lake Wakatipu through west-facing glass each evening.
Casino elegance, without the casino
We've always loved the theatre of a grand salon — green felt, brass, low light, long conversation. So we built one, then removed everything that isn't the theatre.
The Salon Noir hosts cards, parlour games and whisky tastings for our guests each night. It's atmosphere, not gambling: nothing is ever played for money, and nothing is online.
- Face-to-face social play only — chips carry no value
- No real-money gambling or online gaming, anywhere on site
- Exclusively for guests staying at the hotel
Unhurried by design
We keep the hotel small — 24 rooms — so the evening can belong to whoever's in it. No queues, no buffet lines, no conference crowds. Just a fire going by five, dinner when you're ready, and a host who remembers how you take your coffee.
- Seasonal menus built around South Island growers
- Native botanicals — mānuka, kawakawa, harakeke — in the spa
- Central Otago cellars poured nightly in the salon
- Heli-hikes, lake cruises and ski days arranged in person
Thirteen seasons on the lake
Thirteen years in, still a secret
